Researching Religion

Quran: Translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Introduction: "every generation must rewrite and reinterpret it's own history, in the light of itt's own experience and knowledge, so also each generation must trnslate Qur'an Majid in the light of it's own experience and knowledge"
- list of names show the arabic names and english equivalent. This shows the similarity between different religions because many of these names are used in the quran, bible, torah, etc.

Surah 1: Al-Fatiha, or the Opening
Surah 2: Al-Baqara, or the Heifer
- "as to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe."
34. he told the angels to bow down to Adam , which they did except "Iblis." He refused and was haughty: he was of those who reject Faith.
35. God tells them they can live and eat in the garden but they should not touch the tree. Satan made them slip from the garden. As a result they were sent to Earth to live.
47. "Oh children of Israel. Call to mind  the (special) favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you to all others (for my message)" = is it referring to Jewish people? It says 49. "and remember, We delivered you from the people of Pharoah: they set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons and let your women-folk live; therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord" 50 "And remember We divided the Sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharoah's people within your very sight" 51. "And remember We appointed forty nights for Moses, and in his absence, you took the calf (for worship) and you did grievous wrong."
Important excerpts: shows that Islam is not aggressive towards Jewish people (47-55)
62. "those who believe (in the Qur'an) and those who follow the Jewish scriptures, and the Christians, and the Sabians, and who believe in Allah and the Last Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve"

My findings:
Beautifully written and understandable why there are those who choose to follow but I have the following disagreements and concerns.

Is Religion Good or Evil? Video by Aljazeera, Mehdi Hasan interviewing Richard Dawkins
- 911, Burma killing
- societies without faith haven't been less violent (e.g. Hitler, Stalin, Mao Zedong
- science: unleashed killing on a major scale, guns, etc.
- he doesn't believe that religion is evil or that all religious people are evil. The vast majority of religious people don't do terrible things.
- Faith is the belief without evidence. As an atheist
- My finding: science and religion are how you use it. Has the potential for both good and evil.
- Robert Pave of University of Chicago saw . The tap root of suicide terrorism is state nationalism.
- some of the worst crimes are not a result of religion
- religion answers a need but it doesn't make it true
- Mao Zedong told the Dalai Lama that religion is poison.
- there are many people that do good things driven by religion

 My critique on Richard Dawkins:
- he focuses only on religion as a motivator for violence. He exploits events to receive more followers after 911.
- he uses exagerated and intolerant statements. Example on page 356 he says that the trauma from being brought up a Catholic is greater than the trauma from being sexually abused
- he makes sweeping conclusions
- he says that teaching your children religion is child abuse.
